ʻAha Pūnana Leo started as a grassroots effort with the sole purpose of reviving ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi. We have served as a grounding source of vitality, inspiration, and leadership for indigenous language revitalization in Hawai‘i for over 35 years. Our work is rooted in the Kumu Honua Mauli Ola Hawaiʻi in nurturing the bright, inquisitive minds of our youngest haumāna and their ʻohana through our educational pathway. Today, ʻAha Pūnana Leo serves as a local, national and international model for language revitalization.

ʻAha Pūnana Leo has been at the forefront of creating and changing legislation in Hawaii and the U.S. and even helped to lift a 90-year ban on teaching Hawaiian in schools. We continue to advocate for other indigenous populations while raising awareness about the importance of native languages and culture.

We are committed to ensuring that the Hawaiian Language continues to live and thrive. Our mission of “E hoʻoulu i ke kaiaʻōlelo Hawaiʻi no ko Hawaiʻi nei i mau aku ʻo Hawaiʻi he ʻāina Aloha” (To drive and inspire change to ensure a living Hawaiian language in Hawaiʻi and beyond) coupled with our vision of “E Ola Ka ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi” (The Hawaiian Language shall live) are at the core of the many initiatives and milestones the ʻAha Pūnana Leo is bringing to fruition. We are searching for talented individuals who are innovative and passionate to join our organization and expand the ʻolelo Hawaiʻi reach.
