Lamakū: Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
•Show proof of Hawaiian ancestry. Defined as a descendant of the aboriginal
inhabitants of the Hawaiian Islands prior to 1778 as evidenced by original,
certified birth records.
•Be a United States citizen residing in the State of Hawai‘i.
Applicants must show proof of Hawai’i residency by providing a copy of
their State of Hawai‘i Driver’s License or Hawai‘i State ID.
•Show proof of a high school diploma or equivalent.
Includes high school transcript, general education diploma (GED), or Ability
to Benefit test results.
•Be enrolled in an accredited Bachelor degree program, the Hawaiian Medium Teacher Certification program (Kahuawaiola), http://www.olelo.hawaii.edu/dual/orgs/kahuawaiola/index.html or a graduate degree program, performing required research relevant to the improvement of Hawaiian Medium Education.
•Students in Bachelor degree programs must satisfactorily complete four years of Hawaiian language, which is required for entrance into the Hawaiian Medium Teacher Certification Program (Kahuawaiola).
•Undergraduate students and Hawaiian Medium Teacher Certification students (Kahuawaiola) are expected to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75. Post-Baccalaureate students are expected to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
• Demonstrate financial need through the submission of the current year’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can apply online at: www.fafsa.ed.gov
•Complete community service at a Hawaiian Medium School or Entity.
