General Instructions:

You must complete the required forms and submit all required documents before your application will be processed. The ‘Aha Pūnana Leo Scholarship Program will notify you in writing upon receipt of your application. The ‘Aha Pūnana Leo Scholarship Program will not be responsible for any lost, misdirected, or delayed application and/or support documents.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to submit all required documents. There will be no follow-up notification by ‘Aha Pūnana Leo Scholarship Program.

The application form must be signed.

Only official transcripts will be accepted. The issuing institution should mail transcripts directly to the ‘Aha Pūnana Leo Scholarship Office. Photocopied transcripts or grades printed from a university website will not be accepted. Mail to:

Apply Online or Mail in Your Application
Apply online or download the application as a PDF and mail it in. The ‘Aha Pūnana Leo Scholarship Information Guide is available as part of the downloadable application package for your reference. Applications must be received by March 1st to qualify.

Required Documents and Deadlines
The following documents must be submitted by the 1 March deadline.
‘Aha Pūnana Leo Scholarship application form. Applications are available on 1 January through 1 March. Applications may be filled out online or you may download the application packet.

Personal essay stating goals and contributions related to the Native Hawaiian Medium Education. (Letters should be submitted in Hawaiian language if possible.)

A letter of recommendation from a family member or a non-family member showing your interest and goals in Native Hawaiian Medium Education. (Letters should be submitted in Hawaiian language if possible.)

Once preliminary eligibility has been established, each applicant will be notified in writing. Qualified applicants must submit the additional required documents by the 1 May deadline.

1. Official, certified birth certificates (3 generations back)
– Applicant
– Biological Hawaiian parent (either if both are Hawaiian)
– Biological Hawaiian grandparent (parent of aforementioned.)

2. Official high school, college and university transcripts and ALL previous college coursework completed through the fall semester.

3. College acceptance letter from the Office of Admissions reflecting acceptance into a classified degree-seeking program, or Kahuawaiola Hawaiian Medium Teacher Certification Program.

4. A copy of Student Aid Report (SAR) for the academic year you are applying. You must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to receive the SAR.

5. If you are a graduate of a Hawaiian Medium Education high school, you must submit a copy of your graduation certificate from the Hawaiian Medium school you attended.

6. If you are a parent of a student currently attending a Hawaiian Medium Education school, you must submit an official document from the school verifying attendance.

7. If you are an employee currently employed in a Hawaiian Medium Education entity, you must submit an official document from your employer verifying employment, or the most recent paystub.
