Writing Checks in Hawaiian

All banks and stores in Hawai‘i are required to accept checks written entirely in the Hawaiian language as amended and in force since January 1, 1985 by the Constitution of the State of Hawai‘i.

Section 4. English and Hawaiian shall be the official languages of Hawai‘i, except that Hawaiian shall be required for public acts and transactions only as provided by law. Hawaiian is an official language of the State of Hawaii, recognized in Article XV, Section 4 of the State Constitution. Protection of the Hawaiian language by the State is required in Article X, Section 4. Many Hawaiians also see use of Hawaiian in their daily life to be a traditional and customary right reaffirmed and protected by the State in Article XII, Section 7.
