Online Classes:
Technology Requirements

In order to complete this class, there are some specific hardware and software requirements. Both Macintosh and Windows computers are supported. It is possible that other platforms (Linux, UNIX, etc.) will work, but the class designer and teacher can provide absolutely no assistance in the installation, configuration and testing of these systems.

It is unfortunate that major software and operating system vendors do not support Hawaiian and other Polynesian languages completely. With the advent of Unicode and its growing implementation in current and future operating system and program releases, we are hoping that this situation will change, and are lobbying vendors to support our language. In order to compensate for these shortcomings, you will need to install a number of pieces of software on your computer.

We have provided comprehensive installation instructions and a Self-Guided Technology Orientation so that you can install, troubleshoot and test all of the software you will need prior to the start of class. Please go through each page, step-by-step. The amount of time and effort this takes will depend on your operating system and choice of browsers, and the speed of your Internet connection. For someone experienced with software installation and troubleshooting this process could be as short as an hour or two. For someone less experienced, it could take substantially longer.

The student must have access to a Macintosh that meets the following specifications, and has the specified hardware and software:

Power Macintosh (G3, G4 or G5 preferable) running system OS X 10.2 and higher, 10.3.9, or 10.4.6 highly recommended (you cannot use OS X 10.0.x or 10.1.x). 256 Megabytes of RAM minimum for OS X and higher; 512 Meg of RAM or more are highly recommended. We no longer support Mac OS 9 or earlier for this class!

Mozilla Firefox Internet browser. In addition, Javascript must be enabled.

Skype 2.0

Flash Player v.8

QuickTime Player.

iTunes

Shockwave Player

An Internet connection via LAN, DSL, cable modem, or other. Modem (56k minimum) users may not be able to view video or participate in audio chats.

Audio playback capability. Powered speakers or headphones are recommended for optimum sound quality.

A microphone/headset combo that can attach to your computer and allow you to record your voice. Needed for audio chats.

After registration is completed, links will be provided to archives containing the following software, all of which is free.

> Hawaiian fonts and keyboard for Macintosh.
> FirstClass Client for MAC.

Students must also possess sufficient expertise with their Macintosh to deal with the inevitable challenges that come along with online classes. They will undoubtedly need to download and install software on their computers to participate in this class. The instructor(s) will be unable to provide direct technology assistance; it is the responsibility of the student to have the correct hardware and software installed, and have a sufficient Internet connection.

While it is not uncommon for students to work out minor difficulties with hardware and software at the beginning of this type of classes, they must be dealt with promptly or the student could be faced with trying to play "catch-up" with the rest of the class. A diagnostic module will be available to the students prior to the start of class to help them determine if their computers support the technologies used in the class.
