Chief Development Officer

POSITION TITLE: Chief Development Officer (CDO)

The ‘Aha Pūnana Leo is seeking an experienced Senior Manager to design and execute an integrated fundraising strategy including membership, planned giving, major gifts, fundraising campaigns, business sponsorship (underwriting), grant proposals, audience services and support, fundraising events and other initiatives. 

General Duties:

The CDO will work with the other members of the executive management team (CEO, CDO, CMO) to develop funding goals and plans for ‘APL. The CDO will provide strategic leadership to achieve ambitious contributed revenue goals and integrate fundraising efforts designed to meet the financial objectives of the organization. He or she will prepare annual and long-term development plans and evaluate plan implementation and outcomes while assuring the highest ethical and administrative standards are applied to fundraising and financial management. The CDO will be responsible for the overall direction and support for ‘APL’s fundraising activity portfolio, including drives and selected special events. The CDO will also drive efforts to secure grant funding as necessary and appropriate and will also build alliances and partnerships with other organizations to facilitate long-term growth and sustainability of the organization’s work.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Have working knowledge of the Hawaiian language and commit to pursuing fluency in the manner and timeline suitable to the organization’s needs and the Board’s approval.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • 3+ years of nonprofit administrative experience
  • Demonstrated ability to research, prospect, cultivate, and manage major donors and a range of funding opportunities.
  • Strong ability to organize effectively; delegate responsibility; identify and assess opportunities and problems and enact quick, well-informed decisions
  • Stellar communication skills with a variety of audiences
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Post BA degree in a related field
  • Prior participation in Hawaiian Medium Education programming
  • 5+ years of senior nonprofit management/administrative experience
  • Proven track record of achieving revenue targets and deep knowledge of fundraising practices and ethics.

  • The CDO will be engaged as a contracted employee. Commensurate with education and experience, meeting stated qualifications, and further negotiation, compensation will include health insurance and PTO and a annual minimum salary of $85,000.
